Malabar Rebellion anniversary fete begins


The 90th anniversary celebrations of the Malabar Mappila Rebellion began at Tirurangadi, near here, on Saturday. Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran inaugurated the celebrations at a function held at P.S.M.O. College.

Mr. Ramachandran also inspected a guard of honour given to him by the National Cadet Corps unit of the college. He felicitated Balakrishnan Vallikkunnu and Sukumar Kakkad, who had written about the rebellion, on the occasion.

Kutty Ahamed Kutty, MLA, presided over the function.

MLAs P.K. Abdu Rabb, Abdurahman Randathani, K.T. Jaleel and P.M.A. Salam spoke. Arimbra Mohammed, former district panchayat president, welcomed the gathering. C.H. Moosa proposed a vote of thanks.

Seminar

Historian M.G.S. Narayanan inaugurated a seminar in which scholars such as M. Gangadharan, K. Gopalan Kutty, V. Kunhali and Mahmood presented papers.

PSMO College Principal Major K. Ibraine welcomed the gathering. O.P. Mayinkutty of the Department of History, at the college proposed a vote of thanks.

Exhibition

K. Alikutty, veteran physician and PSMO committee chairman, inaugurated an exhibition on Malabar Rebellion.

A musical orchestra, conducted in the evening, paid tributes to Mappila lyricists and singers such as A.V. Mohammed, K.T. Mohammed, K.T. Mohammed Kutty and A.T. Mohammed, who had penned songs about the rebellion.

A get-together of the families of the freedom fighters of the Malabar Rebellion will take place on Sunday. Historian K.N. Panikkar will inaugurate the gathering.
